This goes way back
Dawn dolls are 6.5 inches tall. Barbie dolls are 11.5 inches tall. As a child, I had some of each, plus the Barbie airplane.
Someone crocheted or knit an entire wardrobe or perhaps two wardrobes, one for each of my two Dawn dolls, and my mother sewed me a cloth suitcase for my dolls. One of my Barbie dolls had a bathing suit with a matching piece that could be used as either a skirt or cape.
I have absolutely no idea what most little girls do with dolls, but long before I heard of the book by Janet Wallach, I spent my childhood packing travel wardrobes for my dolls.
The homemade wardrobe was great because all the pieces matched. They were all of the same color yarn but with different details.
So I had something like a short-sleeved shirt and a long-sleeved shirt, a skirt, pants and shorts. Then I would dress her "appropriately for the weather on the jungle island" and then off to frozen Russia or whatever, requiring a warmer outfit.
For my Barbies, I liked packing versatile pieces, like the bathing suit with the cape/skirt piece to get the most mileage out of the least pieces. (Less clothes of theirs fit in my little doll suitcase because they were nearly twice the size.)
I also spent time drawing fantasy outfits.
